6th Grade

Welcome to 6th grade!  This year you will have the chance to grow in so many different ways.  Our goal is to prepare you to become more independent now that you are in middle school.  We make it a priority for you to learn how to come prepared to class, advocate for yourself, and grow into a mature young adult.  

Homework

Students should expect to have some homework each night, especially math.  For language arts and science, students are given all of their assignments on Monday and can work on them throughout the week.  Be sure to check your child's agenda each night to know what they need to be working on. 

In Science, we will cover a wide variety of topics. Students will learn about ecosystems and cycles of matter, waves and their properties, and the various objects in outer space. In addition to our work in our textbook, we will explore many different multimedia, technological, and hands-on resources to help us grasp these concepts. Toward the end of the school year, students have the opportunity to participate in our Science Fair.

In Language Arts, we focus on the writing process using the writing traits of ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions.  We also begin to move past just looking for evidence in the text and begin inferring the answer, which is at the cornerstone of good writing and reading comprehension.  In addition we build skills of summarizing literature and informational text, understanding text organization, synthesizing, tracking ideas across the text(s), analyzing author's choices, and comparing elements of texts. I often will post extra resources on Clever for students to study or to review old lessons.
